Program Notes:

This popular Easter hymn features a distinct contrast between the verses and the chorus. The verses speak of Christ’s death and the sadness of Good Friday, while the chorus celebrates His resurrection on the Sunday. The music reflects the two moods, ending triumphantly with the words of the chorus:

Up from the grave He arose,

With a mighty triumph o'er His foes.

He arose a victor from the dark domain,

And He lives forever with His saints to reign.

He arose! He arose! Hallelujah! Christ arose!
