Is it possible for one of a different cultural background to write with understanding about a Japanese, an Occidental to grasp the inner thoughts and aspirations of an Oriental? To try to portray the character of a man of a race different from one's own may be no easy task, yet I have an overwhelming desire to record the things I have learned and heard and seen in the nearly four years my husband and I were privileged to live in Japan, and the even shorter time we had the good fortune to know Commissioner Koshi Hasegawa.
