This compendium of writings by Major Peter McGuigan provides a helpful addition to the bookshelf of any Salvationist. The articles which first appeared in The Officer are now gathered in one location for the edification of those wishing to reflect upon Christlike leadership.
Many subjects are touched upon as the author helps us explore spiritual leadership that is rooted in our identity in Christ, relationship with God, and responsiveness to the Holy Spirit. Significant forms of leadership are brought to our attention as leaders in the part of the Church known as The Salvation Army ᄀᆰ namely servant leadership and transformational leadership. Within these pages readers will be challenged in their thinking and practice of lifelong learning, exercise of authority and their own following of Christ and others.
The Leadership of Jesus is not a textbook, nor is it a novel that can be read as continuous prose, but is more of a devotional aid to facilitate our own growth as leaders who follow the example and pattern of Christ. Each chapter helpfully contains questions to stimulate reflective practice and a prayer. I would encourage the reader not to read this book in isolation, but to discuss the questions with their mentor or leadership coach for maximum benefit.
We are reminded in this book that ours is the business of the Kingdom of God. This is true, for in our Soldier's Covenant we declare that we will make the value of the Kingdom the values by which we live. My prayer is that this book will enable you to do just that, and wherever you serve as a soldier or as an officer, may the embodiment of those values help you to bring the Kingdom of God to your community.
May God bless you.
