Program Note
The opening trumpet call is based on notes taken from the features tune, "Armageddon," and repeats throughout this brief march as a reminder that we are called by God to be a part of His Army. Though not a complete march in a true march form, it is a march in style and energy.
"Armageddon," frequently sung to the hymn "Who Is on the Lord's Side?" is a welsh hymn tune. The music was composed by C. Luise Reichardt (1780-1825). The lyrics present a call to battle. This march is primarily based on original material from the composer, however the middle section features the text, "By Thy grace divine, We are on the Lord's side; Savior, we are Thine."
Note to the Conductor
In keeping with a traditional march style, the opening measures are marked as marcato (accented and detached), which should be maintained throughout the march.
The only complete reference to the tune appears in measures 30-38. The melody is presented in a descending bell-tone style and must be equally balanced so that the entire tune can be heard.
While this little march is not difficult note-wise, there are challenges in style (marcato), dynamics, and balance that will need to be rehearsed. Remember, this is a call to arms and must maintain a steady tempo and clarion call!
