Program Note
The hymn tune, "Martyrdom," was derived from a Scottish folk melody used for the ballad "Helen of Kirkconnel." It was first used as a hymn tune first by Hugh Wilson (1766-1824) and later adapted into the hymn we know today by Robert A. Smith (1780-1829).
As is common with most hymns, there are several sets of lyrics associated with this tune. This arrangement was conceived with the text "As Pants the Hart," which is derived from Psalms 42 and 23. Another common lyric is "Alas, and Did my Savior Bleed," which is often sung around Easter.
Note to the Conductor
Even though this is a Grade I piece, it can be used as a congregational accompaniment. As noted above, alternate lyrics may be used that provide you with material to share with your young musicians to aid in their faith formation.
As with all Grade I piece, this arrangement provides ample opportunities to work on fundamentals. The style is legato throughout, which may be hard from some young musicians. Gentle attacks and good breathing will go a long way towards making this an effective musical presentation.
This arrangement provides young musicians an opportunity to serve as music ministers. It is never too early for young musicians to understand that the true value of music is only found in service to Our Lord.
