Band Music for Evangelism
Edited by Dr. Dorothy Gates

Preface
Here is another practical and inspirational edition of the American Band Journal.

The Salvation Army lost two iconic musicians in the past year. First, Lt. Colonel Ray Bowes, who was long associated with the International Staff Band as both a playing member and as a bandmaster. Colonel Bowes was a noted composer with contributions in this journal. One of his beautiful original melodies is arranged for cornet in this journal by Norwegian Salvationist, Morgan Juel Stavik. Salvationists also feel the loss of James Anderson who was a composer, conductor, educator and evangelist. William Himes has dedicated "This I Know" to the memory of James Anderson and used motifs from Anderson's first published work "Jesus Loves Me" in this poignant arrangement.

Major Thomas Mack has taken William Himes' meaningful song, "All That I Am" and given us a euphonium duet that will prove to be a lasting addition to Salvation Army repertoire. Roger Trigger has arranged Stuart Townsend's "How Deep the Father's Love" with power and style.

Finally, we welcome Andrew Barrington to the American Band Journal with his march, "Victory". This is both practical for many Army bands and also a reminder of a great old-time Salvation Army song.

I commend this music to you as "Band music for evangelism".
