Band Music for Evangelism
Adjutant Richard E. Holz, Territorial Music Director
Since the formation of the Eastern Territorial Music Section in 1946, the new office has been besieged with numerous requests from Corps Officers and Bandmasters for suitable band music, carefully arranged and edited, which might meet a direct response from our listeners, and be practical for the average American Corps Band.
To prepare to meet this need Commissioner Ernest I. Pugmire, then the Territorial Commander, announced a "Band Music For Evangelism" Competition for composers of the Eastern Territory, concluding January 31, 1947. More than forty Salvationist musicians, mostly young men and including nin servicemen, registered for this event. Of the manuscripts recieved thirty-two met the qualifications and were judged by a special competition board. Members of the Territorial Music Board were ineligible to compete. The winning manuscripts were given their first public performance in April of 1947 at the Territorial Music Leaders Councils in New York and were enthusiastically received.
Commissioner Donald McMillan has continued the splended support of the music forces of the Territory and the result is the publication of the Eastern Territory's first Band Journal, complete with full score.
The journal contains twelve prize winning compositions resulting from the competition. The music contained therein is particularly suited for evangelical purposes in this country as it draws much of its material from the "spiritual songs" known and loved by Americans.
