Comments by Divisional Bandmaster Michael Kenyon
Because of its performances by the International Staff Band this march will already be familiar to many. The composer has produced a scintillating work that by its character (not to mention its tempo!) is obviously more suited to festival rather than processional purposes.
Interesting to play and exciting to listen to, the composition has many interesting features in the scoring, not the least being the combination of the Cornet melodic line of section B with the trio melody in section F. Speed should not obscure or obliterate the many points of detail such as balance, dynamic control and awareness that a lively tempo is not synonymous with a sense of rush.
The Salvation Army chorus employed is 'I've got the joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart'; the exhilaration that results from such a religious experience pervades the whole structure of the march.
