Band Music for Evangelism
Edited by Dr. Dorothy Gates

Preface
"Christmas is not a time or a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and no good will, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas." That quote from Calvin Coolidge gives a helpful perspective on this busy time of year. In The Salvation Army we do recognize the Christmas season as a time of reaching out to help those in need and a time to celebrate the birth of our Savior. Music is always a part of the celebration and the annual Christmas edition of the American Band Journal helps brass bands to have something fresh to consider every year.

This 75th edition of the ABJ offers a variety of programmatic content. Dr. Ronald Holz gives a well-orchestrated transcription of a piano work from Franz Liszt. Dr. Dorothy Gates' arrangement of "O Christmas Tree" for solo trombone will be an immediate favorite. The traditional "Once in Royal David's City" is arranged exquisitely by Brian Bowen and Ruben Schmidt brings a little known German carol to the journal. Finally Nick Simmons-Smith has arranged "We Three Kings" as a trombone feature in 5/4 time. Enjoy the music and enjoy the season.
